The Reality of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)

The statistics below highlight the heartbreaking and far-reaching impact of intimate partner violence in the United States. These facts are more than numbers — they represent real people, real trauma, and the urgent need for prevention, intervention, and support.

Prevalence of Violence

  • 41% of women and 26% of men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime — and reported a related impact.
  • Over 61 million women and 53 million men have experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner.

Early Exposure

  • 16 million women and 11 million men reported their first experience of IPV before the age of 18, showing the urgency of early intervention.

Fatal Consequences

  • 1 in 5 homicide victims in the U.S. is killed by an intimate partner.
  • More than 50% of female homicide victims are murdered by a current or former male intimate partner.

Economic Cost of IPV

  • The lifetime cost of intimate partner violence is estimated at $103,767 per female victim and $23,414 per male victim, covering healthcare, lost productivity, criminal justice, and other costs.
